Cash discount questions

Is a cash discount program legal?

Yes. Federal law (the Durbin Amendment in the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act) lets businesses offer a discount to customers who pay with cash. The program has to be set up correctly, with clear signs and receipts. Tyler handles that for you.

How is this different from a surcharge?

A surcharge adds a fee on top of your price for credit cards only. Surcharges are capped by the card networks, can't be added to debit cards, and some states restrict them. A cash discount program does the opposite: it gives cash customers a discount off your posted price.

Does it work on debit cards?

Yes. In a cash discount program, every card pays the posted card price and cash customers get the discount. That is one reason many owners choose it over surcharging.

Will my customers be upset?

Most people already see cash and card prices at gas stations. Clear signs at the door and register and a simple line on the receipt keep it easy. Customers who don't want to pay the card price can pay cash.

What does it cost me?

Every fee is listed on your application before you sign, and Tyler walks you through each one. Nothing is hidden.

What equipment do I need?

Valor terminals like the VL550, Bodega AI POS, Clover and most systems Tyler sells can run a cash discount or dual pricing program. Tyler sets up the terminal so both prices show automatically.

What about tips?

Your terminal is set up to handle tips the right way for your program. Tyler will show you and your staff how it works during setup.
